Everybody knows how to “google” things and most likely does it several times a day. What could be simpler than to type your search query into Google’s search box? Well, depending on your query may get what you looking for. Otherwise you will google it again and again trying to come up with a relevant query. When you have a hard time coming up with new search ideas, Google has a few tools that will help you in a search process. These are:
- Wonder Wheel
- Related Searched
- Timeline
These tools could be found under “Show Options” on left hand side:

Wonder Wheel
Wonder wheel is my favorite one. When chosen, it presents relevant search keywords in form of wonder wheel. When you click on those keywords it takes you to another wonder wheel with another set of relevant keywords. At the same time you get new search results. This tool helps to visualize search and find relevant terms. When you need to go back in search results, you just click on the previous wonder wheel.
Related Searches
Related searches is another search suggestion tool. This option offers related search terms on top of the page helping to find information more quickly.
Timeline
While Google learnt to deliver search results almost in real time it also allows to look back into specific time period in the past. When this option is chosen you will see a timeline graph with bars indicating volume of the relevant data available for that period. By clicking on the graph you can drill down into narrower time period.
Not many people are aware of these very simple tools that easy and fun to use. For me personally they help to improve relevance of search queries and find information I look much faster.
