Internet Ubiquity

We have had wireless internet in many US cities - Kirkland, Bellevue, Seattle to name a few around my area - but nothing quite what London is planning. According to Boris Johnson, the UK capital will need to install a wireless router or repeat on every lamppost and every bus stop in order to blanked the whole city for the unveiling of the 2012 Olympics.

While this is plain cool in itself because you can have a non-stop internet connection for all that email and mobile web goodiness, it will also lay an infrastructure for mashing the internet with real life in the future. Think of a bioengineered tree that can receive internet signals that tell it to glow only at night or during special occasions (celebrations or a person carrying a proper tag comes nearby). It kind of reminds me of the Avatar nature network, but you won't have to stick your tail in the grass.

For now, though, people will have to settle with novelty stuff like Ping clothing...
